A demanding printed item

The insert or leaflet packed with a product looks simple, yet it is one of the most demanding items in print. It has a large flat size, dense text in small type and printing on both sides, and it must fold down to a very small finished format to fit inside the pack. Above all, it leaves no room for error: its content is approved, and any deviation has consequences.

The paper

Leaflets are printed on lightweight paper so that the folded piece takes up little space. The stock has to combine three properties: sufficient opacity, so that print on the reverse does not show through; dimensional stability; and consistent behaviour in folding. Printing paper this thin at industrial speed calls for suitable equipment and experience with the material.

Legibility

• Clean text. Small type sizes require sharp, stable print across the whole sheet and throughout the run.
• Front-to-back register. Both sides must register accurately, so that folds fall in the margins and not across the text.
• Even density. Black must be consistent without striking through the paper.

Folding and delivery

Leaflets are supplied flat or folded, depending on the recipient's packaging line. In either case, dimensions and fold positions are held to tight tolerances, because the leaflet is fed through automatic machinery. See also: finishing and converting.

Version control

Every change to the text creates a new version of the leaflet. Production must ensure that the current version is printed, that each item code is produced and packed separately, and that different leaflets cannot be mixed. This assurance rests on documented procedures and on checks at every stage, from receipt of the order to dispatch.

Traceability and documentation

For every run it must be known which batch of paper and which inks were used. This traceability, together with the certificate of conformity that accompanies the delivery, allows the recipient to bring the leaflet into their own quality system.
